What is smart ev charger installation?
A smart EV charger does everything a basic charger does, then adds the intelligence to charge cheaper, safer and more conveniently. Through a phone app you can start and stop charging, set schedules, see exactly how much energy and money each session used, and in many cases share the charger with household members. For most Sydney households the headline win is scheduling: program the charger to run only during off-peak or controlled-load tariff windows and your overnight charging cost drops sharply without you lifting a finger.
The feature that genuinely protects your home is dynamic load management. A smart charger can read your home's total current draw through a connected energy meter or CT clamp and automatically throttle the EV charge rate so the property never exceeds its main supply limit. That means you can often add fast charging without a costly mains or switchboard upgrade — the charger simply backs off when the oven, aircon and hot water are all running, then ramps back up. Where multiple chargers share a site, load balancing splits the available capacity intelligently between them.
Smart chargers also unlock solar matching. With the right meter installed, the charger can prioritise your excess rooftop solar — charging hardest when your panels are exporting and easing off when a cloud passes — so you fuel the car from your own generation rather than buying it back from the grid. Remote monitoring and over-the-air firmware updates keep the unit current, and OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) support on many models means the charger isn't locked to a single vendor's cloud and can integrate with third-party management or billing platforms down the track.
We are certified across the leading smart units — Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus and Commander 2, EVSE Australia, plus JuiceBox, KEBA and Ocular IQ — and we don't just bolt them on the wall. We install the required metering, configure the app, set up your tariff schedule and load-management limits, and make sure solar matching actually works against your specific inverter and supply. You leave with a charger that's properly commissioned, not a half-set-up box you have to figure out yourself. If your switchboard needs work to support the install, we coordinate that through our trusted Level 2 ASP partner and manage the process for you.
Who it is for
If you have bought (or are about to buy) an electric vehicle and want to charge it properly at home, smart ev charger installation is the upgrade that matters. A hard-wired Level 2 charger is far faster and safer than trickle-charging from a standard power point, and we match the charger to your car, your parking and your switchboard.
Every install is carried out by licensed electricians and completed to AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards. You can read more about electrical licensing in NSW via NSW Fair Trading.
Charger options for smart ev charger installation
We are brand-independent and install the unit that suits you best. Typical fits for this service include Tesla Wall Connector, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Wallbox Commander 2, Ocular IQ, JuiceBox and KEBA. Our EV charger types guide explains 7.4kW, 11kW and 22kW AC chargers, DC fast charging, and smart vs basic units, and our charger brands page compares Tesla, Wallbox, EVSE Australia and more.
The installation process
- Needs & metering review. We map out your tariff, supply capacity and whether you have solar, then specify the energy meter or CT clamp the smart features require.
- Charger selection. We match you to a smart unit with the right app, load-management and OCPP capabilities for your goals and budget.
- Install & metering. We install the charger on a dedicated protected circuit and fit the CT clamp or meter needed for load management and solar matching.
- Configure & connect. We connect the charger to Wi-Fi, set up your account, program schedules, set load limits and enable solar or eco modes.
- Test & train. We verify charging, scheduling and load throttling under real conditions, then walk you through the app and certify the work to AS/NZS 3000.
Electrical requirements
Smart chargers need the same dedicated, RCBO-protected circuit as any level 2 unit, plus a connected energy meter or CT clamp at the main switchboard so the charger can read total load and excess solar. We confirm supply phase, switchboard capacity and a free circuit way, and verify Wi-Fi reach to the charger location. Load management can often let a smart charger run without a mains upgrade. All work is tested and certified to AS/NZS 3000.
Switchboard upgrades. If your property needs a switchboard upgrade before installation, we work with trusted, fully licensed Level 2 ASP electricians to coordinate this seamlessly — we manage the process so you don’t have to deal with a separate trade.
Key benefits
- Schedule charging for off-peak and controlled-load tariffs to cut running costs automatically.
- Dynamic load management lets you add fast charging while often avoiding a mains upgrade.
- Solar matching charges the car from your own rooftop generation instead of the grid.
- Remote monitoring, energy reporting and over-the-air updates from your phone.
- OCPP-capable models avoid vendor lock-in and integrate with third-party platforms later.
What does it cost?
Indicative: smart level 2 chargers supplied and installed in Sydney commonly run $1,500–$2,600, with the premium over a basic unit covering the smart hardware and the metering/CT clamp required for load management and solar matching. Three-phase and long cable runs add cost. Any switchboard upgrade is quoted separately via our Level 2 ASP partner.
